How to use South Africa PowerBall Odds Calculator
South African PowerBall is Ithuba’s Tuesday/Friday game: five numbers from 1–50 plus a PowerBall from 1–20. Defaults: Tickets 1, Ticket Price 5, Jackpot 20,000,000, Main Matches 5, Bonus Matches 1. It is not US Powerball (5/69+1/26) and not Australian Powerball (7/35+1/20). Calculate: Jackpot Odds 1 in 42,375,200, which is C(50,5)×20=2,118,760×20. Jackpot EV at R20 million is about −R4.53 (expected jackpot return ≈R0.47 against a R5 ticket).
Leave Main Matches at 5 and set Bonus Matches to 0 to price five mains and a missed PowerBall: about 1 in 2,230,274. Set Main Matches to 4 and Bonus Matches to 1 for four mains plus the PowerBall: about 1 in 188,334. Four mains without the PowerBall (Bonus Matches 0) is about 1 in 9,912. Three mains plus PowerBall is about 1 in 4,280. Those cells track Ithuba’s division logic more closely than ZA Lotto’s page can, because this calculator actually has a Bonus Matches field.
Tickets is the number of independent standard games for that Tuesday or Friday. A 40-game shop card is Tickets=40, Chance 1−(1−p)^40≈9.44×10^−7, EV≈−R181 at the R20 million default. Price is R5 per game. PowerBall Plus, when offered as an add-on, is a second matrix against extra stake; do not dump Plus cost into this Price unless you know you are contaminating a main-draw EV.
Jackpot is advertised Division 1 in rand. Paste Ithuba’s Tuesday/Friday figure. South African PowerBall jackpots can climb into tens of millions of rand; they are still a 42.38 million combination space. Main Matches defaults to 5 and Bonus Matches to 1, matching the jackpot. If you omit the PowerBall in your head, you are pricing ZA Lotto by mistake.
Work the fields in order: Tickets, R5, advertised rand jackpot, mains 0–5, PowerBall 0 or 1. Read Jackpot Odds as the 5/50+1/20 product, This Prize Odds as the selected (mains, bonus) cell, Chance as at-least-once on the jackpot p, EV as n·(J·p−5).
About this calculator
Ithuba’s PowerBall is South Africa’s two-drum jackpot, drawn Tuesday and Friday, five from fifty plus PowerBall one from twenty, at R5 a game. It launched as a distinct product from Lotto (6/52, Wednesday/Saturday, R2.50) and has been re-matrixed over the years into the current 5/50+1/20. The name collides with US and Australian Powerball; the arithmetic does not. US Powerball is 5/69+1/26 (292 million). Australian Powerball is 7/35+1/20 (134 million). SA PowerBall is 42.38 million. Quote the right continent.
The PowerBall drum is 1–20, the same size as Australia’s, attached to a 5/50 main that is much smaller than Australia’s 7/35. Five from fifty is only 2.12 million; the 1/20 factor is what pushes Division 1 to 42 million. That is why matching five mains and missing the PowerBall (about 1 in 2.23 million) feels “so close” on TV: you cleared the 5/50 hurdle and lost a 1-in-20 coin flip.
PowerBall Plus and promotional overlays are real commercial layers. This page models the main PowerBall jackpot and the hypergeometric×PowerBall prize you select with Main Matches and Bonus Matches. It does not simulate Plus. Licence history (Uthingo / Gidani / Ithuba) matters for who operates the terminals; it does not change C(50,5)×20.
Rollover culture is strong: a fat Friday jackpot fills Soweto and Sandton queues alike. Pari-mutuel Division 1 splits. This EV assumes one winner. Good-causes branding is part of the National Lottery licence; p is still 1/42,375,200.
Use this calculator to keep SA PowerBall distinct from Lotto and from foreign Powerballs, to toggle Bonus Matches like a division switch, and to see that R5×42 million combinations still wants a R212 million one-winner pool before jackpot-only EV hits zero.
Spaza-shop QuickPicks and downtown office syndicates buy the same 5/50+1/20 geometry. A long Friday roll does not shrink C(50,5)×20. PowerBall Plus, when you add it, is a parallel book: extra rand, extra barrel, extra prize table. Modelling Plus by inflating this Jackpot field is how people cook a fantasy EV. Keep Plus off this form. Ithuba’s licence and good-causes story explain why the terminals exist; they do not explain a 1-in-42-million event as due. Tuesday/Friday versus Lotto’s Wednesday/Saturday is the calendar test: if you typed this calculator on a Saturday morning, you may be pricing the wrong game.
Math under the hood
The Division 1 prize of South African PowerBall is calculated as five unordered mains from fifty times one PowerBall from twenty, Ithuba's Tuesday and Friday product, and it must be separated from both United States Powerball and Australian Powerball in the first sentence of any honest lecture. Main combinations: C(50,5) = 50 × 49 × 48 × 47 × 46 / 120 = 2,118,760. The PowerBall drum contributes twenty. Ticket space is 2,118,760 × 20 = 42,375,200. Jackpot probability is 1 / 42,375,200, about 2.36 × 10^−8, or one in 42,375,200. United States Powerball is 5/69 plus 1/26 = 292,201,338, about 6.9 times harder. Australian Powerball is 7/35 plus 1/20 = 134,490,400, about 3.2 times harder. South African Lotto is 6/52 = 20,358,520 on other nights with no PowerBall field.
Hypergeometric scores on the fifty-ball drum are P(exactly m mains) = C(5,m) × C(45, 5−m) / 2,118,760, then multiplied by 1/20 or 19/20. Five mains plus PowerBall is the jackpot. Five mains and a missed PowerBall is 19 / 42,375,200, about one in 2,230,274 — the television “so close” cell, which is a 1-in-20 coin after clearing 5/50. Four mains plus PowerBall is 225 / 42,375,200, about one in 188,334. Four mains without PowerBall is 225 × 19 / 42,375,200, about one in 9,912. Three mains plus PowerBall is 9,900 / 2,118,760 / 20, about one in 4,280. Treating “five numbers and the PowerBall” as C(51,6) is the wrong model: the extra ball is an independent drum, not a sixth main from the same urn.
Independent games give at-least-once chance 1 − (1 − p)^n. Ten games sit near 2.36 × 10^−7. A hundred-game Friday book still has chance ≈ 2.36 × 10^−6. Covering the matrix at R5 would cost about R212 million.
Expectation uses the default $5 stake and a $20 million advertised jackpot: 20,000,000 / 42,375,200 − 5 ≈ 0.472 − 5 = −$4.528 per game. Ten games: about −$45.28. Jackpot-only breakeven with one winner is 5 × 42,375,200 = $211,876,000. Expected jackpot return at the default is about forty-seven cents. PowerBall Plus, when sold as an add-on, is a parallel book: extra rand, extra barrel, extra prize table. Inflating this jackpot to swallow Plus is how people cook a fantasy expected value.
Assumptions: uniform independent drums, independent games, one Division 1 winner, PowerBall one-from-twenty, $5 stake, Plus excluded, and no mixing with Lotto 6/52 or with foreign Powerball matrices. A long Friday roll does not shrink 42,375,200.
